Dear Carolyn Crosby:
We have just finished reading the article “The ‘Trophy Kids’ Go To Work” and we think that you have touched on some very good points. We do believe that people in the millennial generation do think that they are entitled to a lot of things. We, ourselves, did think that way when we had our first jobs. As high school seniors and never having a job before we had attitudes and didn’t respect our managers as we should have and treated them more like an equal to ourselves rather than superiors. We think that most people in our generation have had more things available than prior generations and are used to having things handed to them without working hard for any of it. After reading the article we seemed to have opened our eyes and we realized that we were both guilty of acting like “trophy kids.” Although, after working for a few years, we have both come to see that we cannot act like children and receive the respect of an adult, therefore changing our attitudes towards the professional environment.
In any generalization there are exceptions. Not everyone in the millennial generation feels entitled and some people do work very hard for what they have. The same goes for our parents’ generation because they were the ones who pushed for the luxuries that we take advantage of today. There are people in that generation who also feel entitled, don’t want to give up time off and still want to make millions of dollars. This type of outlook is exclusive to certain types of personalities, not a generation as a whole.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Katy Robbins and Kara Cogley

Human Resources
MidMichigan Medical Center
Midland, MI

Dear Madam or Sir,
My name is Kathryn Robbins; I am in my junior year at Saginaw Valley State University. I attended Alma College for my freshman year of college and decided to transfer. I am a Biology Major with a Chemistry Minor. My goal is to become a Physician with intent to specialize in anesthesiology or cardiology. My career pathway at Midland High School focused on Health Sciences. This included Anatomy and Physiology as well as two Health Care and Technology classes, one of which was held at Mid-Michigan Medical Center. I was also a high school co-op for Bay Eye Care Center. At Saginaw Valley I excelled in Anatomy and Physiology as well and have worked for MidMichigan Physician’s Group for one year.
In Health Care and Technology 2, I learned medical terminology, about the different areas of the hospital, participated in Walking Wounded, and was able to job shadow and tour different areas of the hospitals. Bay Eye Care Center I worked as a scribe that provided me with the experience of working with both physicians and patients and in a medical office setting. I worked with complex medical terminology and had to deal with many different types of personalities and problems within the office daily. In addition to being a scribe, I scheduled appointments, filed patient’s records, and assisted patients both on the phone and as they entered the office to check them in. I currently work at a MidMichigan Physician’s Group in which I constantly make customer service my number one priority. I check patients in and out; answer phones, as well as other miscellaneous duties around the office as needed. I feel confident that my experience would make me a great asset to the staff at MidMichigan Medical Center as a Registration Clerk.
I would appreciate your consideration for my employment as an employee beginning Winter 2009. As I attend Saginaw Valley, I will be living in Midland year-round and commuting. Thank you for your time and I look forward to discussing this opportunity with you in the very near future.

Sincerely,

Kathryn Robbins

Short Report

Re: Incident on September 26, 2008

Description of Incident

On Sept. 26, 2008 at approximately 2:30 p.m. a customer arrived to exchange an item that was neither purchased nor available at our store. The item was missing the tag and the receipt was not provided. When the clerk explained to the customer that they could not accommodate their requests the customer became irate. The customer began to yell loudly and threaten the clerk. Luckily the situation did not become violent and eventually the customer walked away from the counter but the matter of the item was never resolved.
I was notified 20 minutes after the initial incident, and eventually confronted the customer personally. After explaining our policies and examining the item I helped the customer realize that the item was in fact not purchased at our store, and in turn could not be returned here. I then talked to the clerk, who was emotionally distressed over the situation, and attempted to calm them down. Upon calming them down, the employee proceeded to explain that they did not think they would be able to handle the stresses of the job and gave me their resignation.
Causes of Incident
The clerk was on her second day of working at Macy’s and was at the time working alone. The employee was not trained to handle returns and exchanges as well as she should have been. The clerk should have called for manager assistance along with store security immediately when the customer became frustrated.

PRESS RELEASE
Changes to be put in effect with the arrival of the flu season.
Midland, October 21, 2009: Due to an expected large amount of sick patients over the next couple of weeks as the flu season arrives, Orchid Community Medical Center is asking that anyone visiting inpatients in the main hospital be 18 years or above in age. These visitors must be healthy without any symptoms or respiratory illness. In addition to that, anyone visiting Labor and Delivery must be limited to healthy parents and grandparents only.
We are expecting a large number of people to come down with either Influenza A or the H1N1 virus and are trying to use any measures to prevent the spread of the viruses. Influenza-like illnesses can affect anyone at any age, but the H1N1 virus is most likely to affect someone under the age of 24.
In addition to the visitor rules, we also ask that anyone going to a doctor’s office for a checkup or for an acute visit for an illness to please wear a mask if they are coughing or experiencing any kind of symptoms of respiratory illness to prevent the spread to other patients.
This policy is to be in effect until the end of the 2009-2010 flu season.

Re: Our Collaborative Group Project

Message:

Hi Group –
Overall I think our project turned out alright. I think our end result looked professional and it is work that I am proud of. I like the pictures and I like the looks of the paper in addition to the flow and our example of Apple’s use of aggressive marketing.
I really disliked the fact that we procrastinated so much. I am a procrastinator myself, but when I’m writing something alone I know I will get it done and that it’s my responsibility, but I really got worried about our project getting done when our group meetings kept getting pushed further and further.
I think the strengths of our group were that we got our work done during crunch time and we split up the tasks and got it done.
I think our biggest weakness was procrastination. Everyone, including myself, put our work off until the very end and it stressed everyone out.
I think I learned that marketing is important for a company because it really helps sell a product. I liked being able to talk about Apple Inc. because I love their products that they sell.
I enjoyed working with you all.

Katy Robbins
